The versatility of EPS and EPP is being discovered by more and more industries. EPP, in particular, is suitable as a structural material due to its high strength. A new development is the application of EPP for creating self-supporting enclosures. Through the use of specific surface structures, dust- and air-tight enclosures can be made in which the various components (often electronics) and tubes or wiring can be housed. This development, in which the enclosure consists of just a single-piece, reduces the production costs (less assembly work). The enclosure serves to protect the components both from environmental influences and shock due to impact. Examples of such self-supporting EPP enclosures can be found in ventilation units, vacuum cleaners, refrigerators and cleaning equipment.
We also see increasing numbers of applications in the furniture industry and in the design world. In combination with a supporting frame, EPP is easy to use and can be covered with a layer of soft foam or fabric upholstery. Applications can be found in easy chairs, children's stools, playground rocks, and wine racks and coolers.
With a textured surface, EPP gains an attractive appearance and can be used as a visible element. Many variations of this idea are possible. Through the use of metal-like EPP types, the metal housing can sometimes be eliminated, which results in a cost savings.
